(4) God became manifest to Balaam, who stated, “I have set up the seven altars and offered up a bull and a ram on each altar.” (5) And יהוה put a word in Balaam’s mouth and said, “Return to Balak and speak thus.”

(22) But Samuel said:
“Does the LORD delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices
As much as in obedience to the LORD’s command?
Surely, obedience is better than sacrifice,
Compliance than the fat of rams.
(23) For rebellion is like the sin of divination,
Defiance, like the iniquity of teraphim.
Because you rejected the LORD’s command,
He has rejected you as king.”

(10) Hear the word of the LORD,
You chieftains of Sodom;
Give ear to our God’s instruction,
You folk of Gomorrah!
(11) “What need have I of all your sacrifices?”
Says the LORD.
“I am sated with burnt offerings of rams,
And suet of fatlings,
And blood of bulls;
And I have no delight
In lambs and he-goats.
(12) That you come to appear before Me—
Who asked that of you?
Trample My courts
(13) no more;
Bringing oblations is futile,-c
Incense is offensive to Me.
New moon and sabbath,
Proclaiming of solemnities,
Assemblies with iniquity,-d
I cannot abide.

(1) Cry with full throat, without restraint;
Raise your voice like a ram’s horn!
Declare to My people their transgression,
To the House of Jacob their sin.
(2) To be sure, they seek Me daily,
Eager to learn My ways.
Like a nation that does what is right,
That has not abandoned the laws of its God,
They ask Me for the right way,
They are eager for the nearness of God:
(3) “Why, when we fasted, did You not see?
When we starved our bodies, did You pay no heed?”
Because on your fast day
You see to your business
And oppress all your laborers!
(4) Because you fast in strife and contention,
And you strike with a wicked fist!
Your fasting today is not such
As to make your voice heard on high.
(5) Is such the fast I desire,
A day for men to starve their bodies?
Is it bowing the head like a bulrush
And lying in sackcloth and ashes?
Do you call that a fast,
A day when the LORD is favorable?
(6) No, this is the fast I desire:
To unlock fetters of wickedness,
And untie the cords of the yoke-a
To let the oppressed go free;
To break off every yoke.
(7) It is to share your bread with the hungry,
And to take the wretched poor into your home;
When you see the naked, to clothe him,
And not to ignore your own kin.
(8) Then shall your light burst through like the dawn
And your healing spring up quickly;
Your Vindicator shall march before you,
The Presence of the LORD shall be your rear guard.
(9) Then, when you call, the LORD will answer;
When you cry, He will say: Here I am.
If you banish the yoke from your midst,
The menacing hand,-b and evil speech,
(10) And you offer your compassion to the hungry
And satisfy the famished creature—
Then shall your light shine in darkness,
And your gloom shall be like noonday.
(11) The LORD will guide you always;
He will slake your thirst in parched places-d
And give strength to your bones.
You shall be like a watered garden,
Like a spring whose waters do not fail.
(12) Men from your midst shall rebuild ancient ruins,
You shall restore foundations laid long ago.
And you shall be called
“Repairer of fallen walls,
Restorer of lanes for habitation.”
(13) If you refrain from trampling-e the sabbath,
From pursuing your affairs on My holy day;
If you call the sabbath “delight,”
The LORD’s holy day “honored”;
And if you honor it and go not your ways
Nor look to your affairs, nor strike bargains—
(14) Then you can seek the favor of the LORD.-f
I will set you astride the heights of the earth,
And let you enjoy the heritage of your father Jacob—
For the mouth of the LORD has spoken.

(1) Thus said the LORD:
The heaven is My throne
And the earth is My footstool:
Where could you build a house for Me,
What place could serve as My abode?
(2) All this was made by My hand,
And thus it all came into being
—declares the LORD.
Yet to such a one I look:
To the poor and brokenhearted,
Who is concerned about My word.
(3) As for those who slaughter oxen and slay humans,
Who sacrifice sheep and immolate dogs,
Who present as oblation the blood of swine,
Who offer incense and worship false gods—
Just as they have chosen their ways
And take pleasure in their abominations,
(4) So will I choose to mock them,
To bring on them the very thing they dread.
For I called and none responded,
I spoke and none paid heed.
They did what I deem evil
And chose what I do not want.

(16) Thus said the LORD:
Stand by the roads and consider,
Inquire about ancient paths:
Which is the road to happiness?
Travel it, and find tranquillity for yourselves.
But they said, “We will not.”
(17) And I raised up watchmen for you:
“Hearken to the sound of the horn!”
But they said, “We will not.”
(18) Hear well, O nations,
And know, O community, what is in store for them.-a
(19) Hear, O earth!
I am going to bring disaster upon this people,
The outcome of their own schemes;
For they would not hearken to My words,
And they rejected My Instruction.
(20) What need have I of frankincense
That comes from Sheba,
Or fragrant cane from a distant land?
Your burnt offerings are not acceptable
And your sacrifices are not pleasing to Me.

(3) Thus said the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel: Mend your ways and your actions, and I will let you dwell-a in this place. (4) Don’t put your trust in illusions and say, “The Temple of the LORD, the Temple of the LORD, the Temple of the LORD are these [buildings].” (5) No, if you really mend your ways and your actions; if you execute justice between one man and another; (6) if you do not oppress the stranger, the orphan, and the widow; if you do not shed the blood of the innocent in this place; if you do not follow other gods, to your own hurt— (7) then only will I let you dwell-a in this place, in the land that I gave to your fathers for all time. (8) See, you are relying on illusions that are of no avail. (9) Will you steal and murder and commit adultery and swear falsely, and sacrifice to Baal, and follow other gods whom you have not experienced, (10) and then come and stand before Me in this House which bears My name and say, “We are safe”?—[Safe] to do all these abhorrent things! (11) Do you consider this House, which bears My name, to be a den of thieves? As for Me, I have been watching—declares the LORD.

For you have fallen because of your sin.
(3) Take words with you
And return to the LORD.
Say to Him:
“Forgive all guilt
And accept what is good;
Instead of bulls we will pay
[The offering of] our lips.-a
(4) Assyria shall not save us,
No more will we ride on steeds;

I will pay no heed

(23) Spare Me the sound of your hymns,
And let Me not hear the music of your lutes.

(10) If only you would lock My doors, and not kindle fire on My altar to no purpose! I take no pleasure in you—said the LORD of Hosts—and I will accept no offering from you. (11) For from where the sun rises to where it sets, My name is honored among the nations, and everywhere incense and pure oblation are offered to My name; for My name is honored among the nations—said the LORD of Hosts. (12) But you profane it when you say, “The table of the Lord is defiled and the meat, the food, can be treated with scorn.” (13) You say, “Oh, what a bother!” And so you degrade it—said the LORD of Hosts—and you bring the stolen, the lame, and the sick; and you offer such as an oblation. Will I accept it from you?—said the LORD. (14) A curse on the cheat who has an [unblemished] male in his flock, but for his vow sacrifices a blemished animal to the Lord! For I am a great King—said the LORD of Hosts—and My name is revered among the nations. (1) And now, O priests, this charge is for you: (2) Unless you obey and unless you lay it to heart, and do honor to My name—said the LORD of Hosts—I will send a curse and turn your blessings into curses. (Indeed, I have turned them into curses, because you do not lay it to heart.) (3) I will put your seed under a ban,-a and I will strew dung upon your faces, the dung of your festal sacrifices, and you shall be carried out to its [heap]. (4) Know, then, that I have sent this charge to you that My covenant with Levi may endure—said the LORD of Hosts. (5) I had with him a covenant of life and well-being, which I gave to him, and of reverence, which he showed Me. For he stood in awe of My name. (6) Proper rulings were in his mouth,
And nothing perverse was on his lips;
He served Me with complete loyalty
And held the many back from iniquity.
(7) For the lips of a priest guard knowledge,
And men seek rulings from his mouth;-c
For he is a messenger of the LORD of Hosts.
(8) But you have turned away from that course: You have made the many stumble through your rulings; you have corrupted the covenant of the Levites—said the LORD of Hosts.

(13) And this you do as well:-e You cover the altar of the LORD with tears, weeping, and moaning, so that He refuses to regard the oblation any more and to accept what you offer.-f (14) But you ask, “Because of what?” Because the LORD is a witness between you and the wife of your youth with whom you have broken faith, though she is your partner and covenanted spouse.

(3) He shall act like a smelter and purger of silver; and he shall purify the descendants of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, so that they shall present offerings in righteousness. (4) Then the offerings of Judah and Jerusalem shall be pleasing to the LORD as in the days of yore and in the years of old. (5) But [first] I will step forward to contend against you, and I will act as a relentless accuser against those who have no fear of Me: Who practice sorcery, who commit adultery, who swear falsely, who cheat laborers of their hire, and who subvert [the cause of] the widow, orphan, and stranger, said the LORD of Hosts.

(1) A psalm of Asaph.

God, the LORD God-a spoke
and summoned the world from east to west.
(2) From Zion, perfect in beauty,
God appeared
(3) —let our God come and not fail to act!
Devouring fire preceded Him;
it stormed around Him fiercely.
(4) He summoned the heavens above,
and the earth, for the trial of His people.
(5) “Bring in My devotees,
who made a covenant with Me over sacrifice!”
(6) Then the heavens proclaimed His righteousness,
for He is a God who judges. Selah.
(7) “Pay heed, My people, and I will speak,
O Israel, and I will arraign you.
I am God, your God.
(8) I censure you not for your sacrifices,
and your burnt offerings, made to Me daily;
(9) I claim no bull from your estate,
no he-goats from your pens.
(10) For Mine is every animal of the forest,
the beasts on a thousand mountains.-b
(11) I know every bird of the mountains,
the creatures of the field are subject to Me.
(12) Were I hungry, I would not tell you,
for Mine is the world and all it holds.
(13) Do I eat the flesh of bulls,
or drink the blood of he-goats?
(14) Sacrifice a thank offering to God,
and pay your vows to the Most High.
(15) Call upon Me in time of trouble;
I will rescue you, and you shall honor Me.”
(16) And to the wicked, God said:
“Who are you to recite My laws,
and mouth the terms of My covenant,
(17) seeing that you spurn My discipline,
and brush My words aside?
(18) When you see a thief, you fall in with him,
and throw in your lot with adulterers;
(19) you devote your mouth to evil,
and yoke your tongue to deceit;
(20) you are busy maligning your brother,
defaming the son of your mother.
(21) If I failed to act when you did these things,
you would fancy that I was like you;
so I censure you and confront you with charges.
(22) Mark this, you who are unmindful of God,
lest I tear you apart and no one save you.
(23) He who sacrifices a thank offering honors Me,
and to him who improves his way-b
I will show the salvation of God.”

(1) There was a man in the land of Uz named Job. That man was blameless and upright; he feared God and shunned evil. (2) Seven sons and three daughters were born to him; (3) his possessions were seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen and five hundred she-asses, and a very large household. That man was wealthier than anyone in the East. (4) It was the custom of his sons to hold feasts, each on his set day in his own home. They would invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them. (5) When a round of feast days was over, Job would send word to them to sanctify themselves, and, rising early in the morning, he would make burnt offerings, one for each of them; for Job thought, “Perhaps my children have sinned and blasphemed God in their thoughts.” This is what Job always used to do.

(5) Behold the heavens and see;
Look at the skies high above you.
(6) If you sin, what do you do to Him?
If your transgressions are many,
How do you affect Him?
(7) If you are righteous,
What do you give Him;
What does He receive from your hand?
(8) Your wickedness affects men like yourself;
Your righteousness, mortals.
