Nechama Leibowitz (1905-1997) teacher, commentator, and biblical scholar.

Nechama was born in 1905 in Riga, the capital of Latvia. At home she received a rich and diverse education that included, among other things, intensive Jewish and Hebrew studies. At the age of 14 she moved to Berlin with her family - her parents Mordechai and Freyda and her older brother Yeshayahu - where she graduated from high school. Her academic education was acquired at the universities of Heidelberg, Marburg, and Berlin – where she studied German and English philology, education, and Bible.

As a student, she first taught Hebrew and Bible in the schools of the Adat Israel congregation in Berlin (founded by Rabbi Azriel Hildesheimer). She pioneered the "teaching Hebrew in Hebrew" revolution and this was the focus of her first articles. In her mid-twenties Nechama married her scholarly uncle R. Lipman (Yedidya) Leibowitz, with whom she made Aliya to Israel in 1930. From the moment of her arrival, she devoted herself to teaching.

In 1938 she transitioned to teaching adults. Her encounters with adult students led Nechama to the conclusion that they too need instruction and guidance in their studies and therefore she took it upon herself to assist anyone who wished to study the parsha more intensively.

She chose to realize this goal through her "Gilyonot le-iyun be-parashat ha-shavua" (Pages for studying the parsha). And indeed in 1942, concurrent with her work as a teacher at the seminary, Nechama began her most significant enterprise, through which she successfully endeavored to instill in her students a love of the Bible and to habituate them to in-depth critical thinking.

In 1955, after 22 years as a teacher, Nechama left the teachers' seminary and began publishing her "Iyunim be-parashat ha-shavua" (Studies in the parsha), which in addition to questions on the verses and on the commentators, also included her own original interpretations. The "Iyunim" were translated into many languages and reached a large number of Jewish communities around the world. Several years later the "Iyunim" were collected and published as 5 volumes, one on each book of the Pentateuch.

In 1956 she was awarded the Israel Prize for education, recognizing her contribution to reshaping the form and standards of Bible instruction, both in Israel and around the world. Over the course of the next years, Nechama was also awarded the Bialik Prize, the Saul Rothberg Prize on behalf of the Hebrew University, the Judith Lieberman Award, and others. Additionally, that year she began teaching at the University of Bar Ilan and was among the founders of its Department of Bible Studies. A year later she was also appointed a lecturer at Tel Aviv University, where 11 years subsequently she was granted the title of professor. She taught at Tel Aviv University until retiring in 1972.

Over the years, Nechama taught at other educational institutions as well, including schools with a religious orientation (such as Kollel Meretz and Herzog College). Often, she was the first woman on the teaching staff. Aside from her official positions, for several years Nechama gave a weekly class on the Kol Israel radio broadcasts, was among the scholars who gave interpretations on the chapter of the day on the radio, and taught many classes in kibbutzim, various Israeli towns, in the army, in different communities, and at her home in Jerusalem, where her close students would come to hear regular classes.

Nechama Leibowitz passed away in Jerusalem on 5 Nissan 5757, April 12, 1997. At her request, no titles or descriptions were inscribed on her headstone, aside from the word Morah (teacher).

נחמה ליבוביץ (1905-1997) מורה, פרשנית וחוקרת פרשנות התנ"ך.

נחמה נולדה בשנת 1905 בריגה, בירת לטביה. בבית הוריה קיבלה חינוך עשיר ומגוון שכלל בין היתר, לימודים תורניים מעמיקים ולימודי עברית. בהיותה בת 14 הגרה לברלין יחד עם משפחתה, שכללה את הוריה - מרדכי ופריידה, ואת אחיה הבכור - ישעיהו, ושם סיימה את ביה"ס התיכון. את השכלתה האקדמית רכשה באוניברסיטאות היידלברג, מרבורג וברלין – בהן למדה פילולוגיה גרמנית ואנגלית, חינוך ומקרא.

בהיותה סטודנטית החלה ללמד עברית ותנ"ך בבתי הספר (היסודי והתיכון) של קהילת "עדת ישראל" בברלין (מיסודו של הרב עזריאל הילדסהיימר). היא הובילה את מהפכת "הוראת עברית בעברית" ואף פרסמה את מאמריה הראשונים בתחום הזה. באמצע שנות העשרים לחייה נישאה נחמה לדודה המלומד, ר' ליפמן (ידידיה) ליבוביץ, ויחד עמו עלתה לארץ-ישראל ב-1930. מרגע בואה לארץ התמסרה להוראה, היא מצאה עבודה כמורה בסמינר המזרחי למורות בירושלים, והדריכה מורים וסמינריסטים בעבודה מעשית בבתי ספר יסודיים (1932-1939).

בשנת 1938 החלה לעסוק בהוראת מבוגרים. המפגש עם לומדים מבוגרים הביא את נחמה למסקנה שגם הלומד המבוגר זקוק להדרכה והכוונה בלימודו ולכן קבעה לה כמטרה לסייע ככל שביכולתה לכל מי שחשקה נפשו להעמיק וללמוד את פרשת השבוע ביסודיות.

הדרך להגשמת המטרה היתה ה"גיליונות לעיון בפרשת השבוע". וכך, ב-1942 במקביל לעבודתה כמורה בסמינר התחילה נחמה את הגדול שבמפעלי חייה, באמצעותו ניסתה, ואף הצליחה, להחדיר בתלמידיה את אהבת התנ"ך ולהרגילם לחשיבה ביקורתית מעמיקה.

בשנת 1955, לאחר 22 שנות הוראה, עזבה נחמה את הסמינר למורות, והחלה לפרסם גם את ה"עיונים בפרשת השבוע" שכללו, מלבד שאלות על הפסוקים ועל דברי הפרשנים, גם התייחסויות פרשניות של נחמה עצמה. ה"עיונים" תורגמו לשפות רבות והגיעו לקהילות יהודיות רבות בכל העולם, כעבור שנים אחדות קובצו ה"עיונים" וראו אור כ-5 ספרים על חמשה חומשי תורה.

ב-1956 זכתה בפרס ישראל לחינוך על תרומתה לשינוי פניה ורמתה של הוראת התנ"ך בארץ בפרט, ובעולם בכלל. בשנים הבאות זכתה נחמה גם בפרס ביאליק, בפרס רוטברג מטעם האוניברסיטה העברית, בפרס יהודית ליברמן, ועוד. באותה שנה החלה גם ללמד באוניברסיטת "בר-אילן" והיתה לאחד מאבני היסוד של החוג לתנ"ך. שנה לאחר מכן נתמנתה למרצה גם באוניברסיטת תל אביב, ובחלוף עוד 11 שנים קיבלה תואר פרופסור. היא לימדה באוניברסיטת תל אביב עד שנת 1972 בה יצאה לגימלאות.

במהלך השנים לימדה נחמה במוסדות חינוכיים נוספים, ביניהם מוסדות תורניים (דוגמת "כולל מרץ" ו"מכללת הרצוג"). לעתים קרובות היא היתה האישה הראשונה בסגל המורים. מלבד משרותיה הרשמיות נתנה נחמה במשך שנים אחדות שיעור שבועי בשידורי הרדיו של "קול ישראל", השתתפה בפרשנות של פרקי היום בתנ"ך ברדיו, וכן הרבתה ללמד בקיבוצים, בישובים בכל קצווי הארץ, בצבא, בקהילות שונות ובביתה בירושלים, בו נתנה שיעורים קבועים לתלמידיה הקרובים.

נחמה ליבוביץ נפטרה בירושלים ביום ה' בניסן התשנ"ז, 12 באפריל 1997. לפי בקשתה לא נחקקו על מצבתה תארים ותיאורים זולת המילה "מורה".
