מֵאֵצֶל הַנֶּגֶב. (תרגום:) ״מִסְּטַר אֶבֶן אָתָא דִּלְקֳבֵל דָּרוֹמָא״: From near the southern side. [Targum renders,] 'from the side of the landmark stone which was toward the south.'

עַד דָּוִד הִגְדִּיל. הִרְבָּה לִבְכּוֹת: Until Dovid exceeded. I.e., he cried more.34I.e., ‘more than Yonoson.’ However, according to Ralbag, ‘more than is fitting.’ Dovid cried more than Yonoson because unlike Yonoson who could return home now, Dovid would have to flee from Shaul who was seeking to kill him.
