Aramaized from Akka. shabbitu (= שֵׁבֶט; q.v.), from which it was dissimilated into שַׁרְבִיט ( bb became rb). cp. base כרסם (= to chew, gnaw), which was dissimilated from כסם (= to shear, clip). cp. Coptic sharbōt, herbōt (= staff, rod), beside sh(e)bot.] Derivatives: שׁרבט ᴵ (possibly also שׁרבט ᴵᴵ), שַׁרְבִיטַאי, שַׁרְבִיטָן.
