Divrei David on Rashi is a 17th-century supercommentary on Rashi’s Torah commentary by Rabbi David HaLevi Segal, best-known for his commentary on the Shulchan Arukh, the Turei Zahav or “Taz.” Divrei David frequently quotes from other supercommentaries on Rashi, like that of Rabbi Eliyahu Mizrachi and the Maharal of Prague’s Gur Aryeh. Like his predecessors, Segal looks to defend Rashi against critiques of Ramban, offering novel suggestions to resolve challenges. Segal writes with a unique confidence in his interpretations, using language like “even though [others did not interpret this way], my soul has said my portion from God, and it is right.”
